What is the sixth seal of Revelation?
The Sixth Seal of Revelation (
) describes a terrifying cosmic upheaval signaling the end of the world and the coming of God's judgment. When the seal is broken, a great earthquake occurs, followed by the sun turning black, the moon turning blood red, and the stars falling from the sky. The heavens themselves roll up like a scroll, and mountains and islands are displaced. In response, all of humanity, from kings to commoners, hide in caves, crying out for protection from the wrath of God and the Lamb. This dramatic scene underscores the finality of divine justice and the unavoidable reckoning for those who have rejected God.
The Seven Seals of Revelation, found in chapters 6 to 8, symbolize significant phases in the unfolding of God’s judgment and the history of the church. Each seal represents a distinct event or period, from the spread of the gospel to the final judgment. These seals, revealed by the Lamb (Jesus Christ), provide insight into the spiritual and physical battles believers face as they await Christ’s return, ultimately leading to the triumph of God’s kingdom and the vindication of His justice. “The seals denote events of a religious character, and contain the history of the church from the opening of the Christian era to the coming of Christ.” (Daniel and Revelation)
In this article, we will explore the Sixth Seal of Revelation, its symbolic meaning, the terrifying events it describes, and its implications for both the faithful and the unbelieving world.
The Sixth Seal in Revelation
The Sixth Seal is described in Revelation 6:12-17:
This passage describes a sequence of catastrophic events that take place when the Sixth Seal is broken. There is an enormous earthquake, followed by the darkening of the sun and the moon turning red like blood. The stars fall from the sky, and the heavens themselves roll up like a scroll (Joel 3:15; Joel 2:31; Matthew 24:29). In the face of these terrifying events, all of humanity, from kings to commoners, flee to caves and mountains, seeking to escape the wrath of God and the Lamb.
Church of Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7)
The Sixth Seal corresponds to the Church of Philadelphia, representing the Great Awakening and the spread of the gospel during a time of spiritual revival and preparation for Christ’s second coming.
The Great Earthquake
The first event that occurs with the breaking of the Sixth Seal is a “great earthquake.” Earthquakes are a frequent symbol of divine intervention in the Bible, often representing a shaking or upheaval of the world in preparation for God’s judgment. This earthquake shakes the very foundations of the earth, marking a clear division between the present age and the coming judgment.
The symbolism of the earthquake is significant. In many parts of the Bible, earthquakes are associated with God’s presence, His power, and the day of judgment. For example, in Isaiah 2:19, the earth is shaken when the Lord arises to punish the wicked. The events of the sixth seal reveal the disjointing of the physical universe. The prophet Joel had already used the figure of an earthquake to describe the upheaval of nature in the day of the Lord (Joel 2:10; Isaiah 13:9-11; Amos 8:9).
Fulfillment:
Inasmuch as the earthquake is followed by the darkening of the sun, and the latter event may be dated in A.D. 1780, this earthquake has been identified with the Lisbon quake on Nov. 1, 1755, one of the most severe seismological disturbances ever recorded. The shock of the quake was felt not only in North Africa but also as far away as the West Indies. Identification with the great Lisbon earthquake suggests 1755 as an appropriate beginning date.
The Darkening of the Sun and Moon
Following the earthquake, the sun turns “black like sackcloth made of goat hair,” and the moon turns “blood red.” This dramatic imagery evokes a sense of total darkness and foreboding. The sun, which is traditionally a symbol of God’s light and life-giving power, is completely obscured, symbolizing the removal of divine favor and the onset of God’s wrath.
This celestial darkness is reminiscent of the judgment scenes in the Bible, where the sun and moon are darkened as a sign of God’s anger (Joel 2:31 and Matthew 24:29). The blood-red moon suggests the shedding of blood and the great loss of life that will occur during the final judgment.
Fulfillment:
The darkening of the sun took place on May 19, 1780, known as the great dark day. On the night of May 19, 1780, the moon’s light was veiled, even as the sun’s had been during the daytime hours.
The Falling Stars
The next event described in the Sixth Seal is the falling of the stars. The stars “fall to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.” This imagery conveys the total collapse of the natural order. Stars, which have long been seen as symbols of stability and permanence, are now falling from the sky, signifying that nothing in the created world is immune from God’s judgment. The comparison to figs falling from a tree in a strong wind highlights the suddenness and inevitability of this event. Just as figs fall when the tree is shaken, so too will the stars fall when God’s judgment is unleashed.
Fulfillment:
This was fulfilled in Nov. 13, 1833, in what was undoubtedly the greatest meteor shower in history.

Humanity’s Response: Fear and Desperation
In response to these catastrophic events, all of humanity-“the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free person”-flee to the caves and rocks, desperately seeking to hide from the wrath of God and the Lamb. They cry out, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”
This desperate plea reveals the universal fear and terror that will accompany the final judgment. Those who have rejected God will be unable to escape His wrath. The powerful, the wealthy, and the oppressed alike will all be equally vulnerable to the divine judgment that is being poured out upon the earth. Their cry for the mountains to fall on them reflects the hopelessness and despair they will experience as they face the righteous wrath of God.
The Great Day of Wrath
The Sixth Seal ends with the declaration that “the great day of their wrath has come.” This marks the climax of human history, the final reckoning for all of humanity. The Day of Wrath refers to the final judgment when God will hold every person accountable for their actions. Those who have rejected Him and lived in rebellion will face eternal consequences, while those who have remained faithful will be vindicated.
The great day of God’s wrath is both a terrifying and a righteous event. It is a day when evil will be judged, and justice will be served. It is also a day when God’s sovereignty will be fully revealed, and His righteous rule will be established forever.
The Sixth Seal and Its Significance
The Sixth Seal is a vision of cosmic upheaval and divine wrath, marking the climactic end of the old world and the beginning of God’s final judgment. It serves as a powerful reminder of the reality of divine justice and the consequences of rejecting God. For believers, the Sixth Seal is a sobering reminder to remain faithful, knowing that God will ultimately bring justice to the earth. For the unbelieving world, it is a warning of the coming judgment that will come upon all who choose to live apart from God.
The Sixth Seal also emphasizes the urgency of repentance and faith in Christ. The terrifying events described in this vision are a clear indication that the end is near, and there is no escape from God’s judgment except through the righteousness of Christ. The Day of Wrath will come, and the question for every person is whether they will stand in Christ’s righteousness or face His judgment.
Conclusion
This passage describes a sequence of catastrophic events that take place when the Sixth Seal is broken. There is an enormous earthquake, followed by the darkening of the sun, the moon turning red like blood, and the stars fall from the sky (Joel 3:15; Joel 2:31; Matthew 24:29). The Sixth Seal of Revelation presents a vision of unparalleled cosmic events, signaling the onset of God’s final judgment. The Sixth Seal serves as a powerful reminder of the reality of judgment and the importance of standing firm in faith, trusting in God’s ultimate victory over evil.
