Mortality is a fundamental aspect of human existence. Every person is born, lives for a time, and eventually dies. But what does the Bible teach about mortality? Are humans naturally immortal, or is immortality something granted by God?
The Scriptures clearly present human beings as mortal, meaning subject to death. Immortality is not inherent in humanity but is a gift that God gives under specific conditions. From the very beginning, the Bible establishes this truth.
Humanity Was Created Mortal
The creation account in Genesis reveals that humans were not created as inherently immortal beings. Instead, they were formed from the dust and given life by God:
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7, NKJV).
Notice that man became a living being; he was not given an immortal soul separate from his body. Life is a combination of the body (dust) and the breath of God. God also warned Adam about the consequence of disobedience:
“For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17, NKJV).
If humans were naturally immortal, this warning would have no real meaning. Death became a reality because of sin.
Death Entered Through Sin
The Bible consistently teaches that mortality is the result of sin:
“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men” (Romans 5:12, NKJV).
Death was not part of God’s original design. It is an intruder—a consequence of rebellion against God. Paul reinforces this truth:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23, NKJV).
Here we see a clear contrast:
- Death is earned (wages of sin)
- Eternal life is given (gift of God)
This means immortality is not something humans possess naturally—it must be received.
The Nature of Death in the Bible
The Bible describes death not as a transition to another conscious state, but as a state of unconsciousness, often compared to sleep.
Death Is Like Sleep
“Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up” (John 11:11, NKJV).
Later, He clarified:
“Lazarus is dead” (John 11:14, NKJV).
Sleep is used as a metaphor because the dead are not conscious.
No Awareness in Death
The book of Ecclesiastes explains:
“For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5, NKJV).
“His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth; in that very day his plans perish” (Psalm 146:4, NKJV).
These passages indicate that human beings do not continue conscious activity after death. Their thoughts and plans cease.
The Soul Is Not Naturally Immortal
A common belief is that humans possess an immortal soul that lives on after death. However, the Bible teaches otherwise.
The Soul Can Die
“The soul who sins shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4, NKJV).
If the soul were inherently immortal, it could not die. But Scripture clearly states that it is subject to death.
Only God Has Immortality
“Who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light” (1 Timothy 6:16, NKJV).
This verse makes it explicit: immortality belongs to God alone. Humans do not possess it by nature.
Immortality Is a Gift Through Christ
While humans are mortal, the Bible offers hope. Immortality is promised to those who accept salvation through Jesus Christ.
Eternal Life Through Jesus
“And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son” (1 John 5:11, NKJV).
Eternal life is not inherent—it is given through Christ.
Seeking Immortality
“Eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality” (Romans 2:7, NKJV).
This shows that immortality is something to be sought, not something already possessed.
When Do Believers Receive Immortality?
The Bible teaches that immortality is granted at the resurrection, not at death.
The Resurrection at Christ’s Return
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout… and the dead in Christ will rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, NKJV).
The Gift of Immortality
“For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:53, NKJV).
This passage is crucial. It shows that:
- Humans are currently mortal
- Immortality is something we put on in the future
If we already had immortality, there would be no need to receive it.
What Happens to the Wicked?
The Bible teaches that those who reject God do not receive immortality.
Final Destruction
“But the wicked shall perish… into smoke they shall vanish away” (Psalm 37:20, NKJV).
“Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 1:9, NKJV).
This indicates that the fate of the wicked is not eternal conscious life, but destruction.
The Second Death
“And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire… This is the second death” (Revelation 20:15, NKJV).
The term “second death” implies complete and final extinction, not eternal life in torment.
Eternal Life on Earth Made New
God’s ultimate plan is not endless death but restored life.
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death” (Revelation 21:4, NKJV).
In the new creation:
- Death is abolished
- Suffering ends
- Life is eternal for the redeemed
This is the fulfillment of God’s promise to overcome mortality.
Why This Teaching Matters
Understanding the Bible’s teaching on mortality has important implications:
It Clarifies the Nature of God
God is not a tormentor who keeps people alive forever to suffer. Instead, He is just and merciful.
It Emphasizes the Need for Salvation
Since humans are mortal, eternal life is not guaranteed. It must be received through Christ.
It Gives Hope in Death
Death is not the end but a temporary state before resurrection for believers.
Living in Light of Mortality
The Bible encourages us to live wisely, knowing life is temporary.
“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12, NKJV).
Recognizing our mortality should lead us to:
- Seek God earnestly
- Value what truly matters
- Prepare for eternity
Conclusion
The Bible clearly teaches that human beings are mortal. Death entered the world through sin, and all humanity is subject to it. Contrary to popular belief, the soul is not inherently immortal—only God possesses immortality. However, the good news is that God offers eternal life through Jesus Christ. Immortality is a gift given at the resurrection to those who trust in Him.
Until then, death is described as a sleep—a temporary state awaiting the return of Christ. Ultimately, God will abolish death entirely and grant everlasting life to the redeemed. This biblical perspective brings both clarity and hope. While we are mortal now, through Christ, we can inherit immortality and live forever in His presence.
