Is morality evolving?

Morality

Merriam Webster dictionary defines morality as “beliefs about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior.” The moral laws of God are revealed principles of His holy character (Isaiah 5:16; Romans 7:12) that will always be true as long as God exists.

The Lord has certain immutable laws by which He governs the universe. At the very beginning, the Lord gave humanity His Moral laws of right and wrong and wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger (Exodus 31:18; 32:16). The commandments of God, in which man’s duties are set forth, are true. They remain steadfast forever, they are unchangeable.

God’s moral law became the road map that points out the right paths to follow in order to find true and supreme happiness. “He that keepeth the law, happy is he” (Proverbs 29:18; Proverbs 3:1, 2). The scriptures declare that “sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4). And since the law of God is perfect (Psalms 19:7), it covers every conceivable sin. God’s moral law covers “the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

But God’s law does not save anyone. Salvation is by faith alone in Christ. “For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8, 9). God’s law serves only as a mirror (James 1:23-25) that points out the wrongdoing in our lives and leads us to Christ for cleansing, forgiveness and victory.

Can God’s Moral Law Evolve or Change?

If the law could have been changed, God would have immediately made that change when Adam and Eve sinned instead of having to send His Son to die on our behalf to pay the penalty of the broken law. But this was impossible because God does not change Himself and the moral law is a revelation of who He is (Luke 18:19; 1 Timothy 1;8).

The scriptures confirm about morality, “It is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail” (Luke 16:17). And the Lord says, “My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips” (Psalms 89:34 ). For “All his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever” (Psalms 111:7, 8). With God there “is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

When the religious Jewish leaders accused Jesus of changing God’s moral law, He answered them saying, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law. … I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill … Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled” (Matthew 5:17, 18). The Lord Himself confirmed His law as binding upon the believers, and announced that anyone who should presume to change them either by teaching or by example would “in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20).
