Left Behind?

Kirk Cameron, best known for his role on Growing Pains, starred in the Left Behind movie series released in 2000. This series, based on the novels by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, depicts a world caught off guard by the supposed secret rapture of the saints. The films have sparked significant interest and debate regarding eschatological beliefs, particularly the concept of being ‘Left Behind.’ The portrayal of the rapture in popular media raises important questions about what the Bible actually teaches regarding the return of Christ and the fate of believers.

The ‘secret rapture’ view posits that the return of Jesus will occur in two distinct phases. First, He will come secretly to take the church to heaven, followed by a second coming seven years later, where He will return openly in power and glory. During this intervening period, it is believed that the Antichrist will rise to power and a time of great tribulation will ensue. Proponents of this view also suggest that those who missed the first rapture will have a second chance for salvation. However, this interpretation raises several questions that warrant a closer examination of the Scriptures.

Biblical Perspective on the Rapture

However, the Bible does not support the notion of these two separate comings of Jesus. In fact, there is no mention of a second stage of His coming occurring seven years after the so-called ‘rapture.’ Interestingly, the term ‘rapture’ itself is not found in the Scriptures; it is a term that has been coined to describe the second advent of Jesus. The misunderstanding surrounding the rapture often stems from a selective reading of biblical texts.

According to biblical texts, Christ’s return, the resurrection of the dead, and the catching up of the saints to meet Jesus in the air all occur simultaneously at the end of the world. This is clearly articulated in the following verses:

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17).

This passage emphasizes that the resurrection and the gathering of believers happen at the same time as Christ’s return, not before it. Jesus Himself reassured His followers, saying, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). This promise raises an important question: Why would Jesus assure His presence with the church until the end of the world if He intended to remove them seven years prior?

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence” (Psalm 50:3).

“For the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory” (Luke 21:26, 27).

These verses, among many others, make it clear that the second coming of Christ will be a visible and powerful event, witnessed by all. At the time of Christ’s return, each individual’s decision regarding faith will have already been made, indicating that there will be no second chance for conversion. The urgency of this message cannot be overstated, as it calls for a personal response to the gospel.

“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be” (Revelation 22:12).

The Importance of Preparation

Given these biblical truths, it is crucial for believers to understand the significance of being prepared for Christ’s return. The teachings of Jesus emphasize the need for vigilance and readiness. In the parable of the ten virgins, for instance, Jesus illustrates the importance of being prepared for the bridegroom’s arrival (Matthew 25:1-13).
