Astrology, Horoscope and the Zodiac

The basic belief of astrology, horoscope and the zodiac is that planets and stars exert an influence upon human destiny. Nowhere in the Bible, God tells us to build our lives around moon phases and the signs of the zodiac as astrologers teach.

Astrology or Zodiac, as a form of divination, is forbidden in Scripture. “And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places … to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven” (2 Kings 23:5).

The Lord warned the Israelites from devotion to astrology in Deuteronomy 4:19: “And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the people under the whole heaven as a heritage.”

Astrology is a form of idolatry because it puts man’s devices before God’s ways. That’s why astrologers will be judged at the end. “Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it” (Isaiah 47:13-14).

Jeremiah 10:2-3 tells us: “Thus saith the Lord, learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain . . .” The pagan nations made astrological calculations based on extraordinary appearances in the sky. Celestial phenomena, such as eclipses, comets, and certain conjunctions of the heavenly bodies, were often considered pointers of national or individual fortunes (Isaiah 47:13).

Astrology and the signs of the zodiac are not something to put faith in or to believe as determiners of our daily lives or destinies. For the royal astrologers of the Babylonian court were put to shame by God’s prophet Daniel (Daniel 1:20) and were powerless to interpret the king’s dream (Daniel 2:27). The future was revealed only to the prophet of God Daniel (Daniel 2:28) for only God knows the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:13).

The evil doers “seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter.” But the Lord rebukes them saying, “should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?” (Isaiah 8:19). The Lord forbade seeking Mediums and wizards for by doing so, a person is in direct communication with demons (Leviticus 19:31; Deuteronomy 18:11).

Our wisdom comes from God, not the study of astrology (James 1:5). The Word of God, the Bible, is the only true and safe guide in life (Psalm 119:105). For it lights up the path so that the faithful may walk safely in the spiritual darkness of this world. He who has this light to lead him need not fall even though his path is surrounded by evil (2 Peter 1:19)
