The Bible warns believers of a coming period known as the Great Tribulation, a time of unprecedented trouble, testing, and persecution. Jesus described this time as worse than any other in human history: “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matthew 24:21, NKJV).
This sobering statement shows how serious this period will be. As such, Christians are urged to prepare spiritually, mentally, and practically to stand firm in the faith. This article will examine what the Great Tribulation is, what the Bible says about it, and how we can prepare to endure and overcome through faith in Christ.
What Is the Great Tribulation?
The term “Great Tribulation” appears explicitly in Revelation 7:14: “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (NKJV). It refers to a time of intense suffering and testing for God’s people, especially in the last days before the second coming of Christ.
Jesus also referred to this time in His Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24. In verses 15-22, He spoke of abomination, persecution, false messiahs, and great deception. Daniel the prophet described a similar time of distress: “And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time” (Daniel 12:1, NKJV).
Many Bible students interpret this as a future, global event that will culminate in the close of human probation and the return of Jesus. The Great Tribulation will be marked by spiritual deception, religious oppression, economic control, and a final conflict between the followers of Christ and the powers of evil.
Why God Allows the Great Tribulation
Though the Great Tribulation will be a time of suffering, God has a purpose in allowing it. It will serve to:
- Purify His people – Just as gold is refined in fire, the tribulation will purify the faith of believers. “Many shall be purified, made white, and refined” (Daniel 12:10, NKJV).
- Expose true loyalty – The testing will reveal who truly serves God. “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23, NKJV).
- Separate the wheat from the tares – God will allow this time to reveal who are truly His. Jesus illustrated this in the parable of the wheat and tares (Matthew 13:24-30).
- Bring final justice – The tribulation will lead to God’s judgment on the wicked and the vindication of the righteous (Revelation 16-18).
The Role of the Three Angels’ Messages
Revelation 14:6-12 contains three vital messages that are especially important for preparation. These are the final warnings to the world before the end.
- The first angel calls people to worship the Creator and fear God (Revelation 14:6-7).
- The second angel warns about the fall of Babylon-a symbol of false religion (Revelation 14:8).
- The third angel warns against worshiping the beast and receiving its mark (Revelation 14:9-11).
These messages show that the tribulation will involve a major test of worship-who people give their allegiance to: the true God or a counterfeit (the beast) power.
Key Signs Leading to the Tribulation
The Bible provides many signs that will precede the tribulation, including:
- Wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6-7)
- Natural disasters (Luke 21:11)
- Pestilences and famines (Matthew 24:7)
- Moral decline (2 Timothy 3:1-5)
- Religious deception and false revival (Matthew 24:5,11)
- Persecution of God’s people (Matthew 24:9)
While many of these have occurred throughout history, they will increase in intensity as the end draws near. Christians are urged to stay awake spiritually and be prepared (Matthew 24:42-44).
Spiritual Preparation for the Great Tribulation
1. Build a personal relationship with Jesus
Only a deep and living connection with Christ can sustain someone through the tribulation. Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you… without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5, NKJV). We must spend daily time in prayer, Bible study, and surrender to God.
2. Strengthen faith through the Word
“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17, NKJV). During the tribulation, the Word of God will be our anchor. Just as Jesus resisted temptation in the wilderness by quoting Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11), we must be rooted in the promises of God.
3. Develop a life of prayer
Prayer is our lifeline to God. Jesus taught that we should “watch and pray” lest we fall into temptation (Matthew 26:41). During times of stress and fear, prayer will be the source of peace and courage.
4. Practice obedience and trust
The tribulation will test our loyalty. Those who are in the habit of obeying God’s commands (Exodus 20:1-17) now will be better prepared when obedience becomes costly. Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15, NKJV).
5. Receive the seal of God
The Bible describes a sealing that takes place before the winds of trouble are released (Revelation 7:1-3). This symbolic seal represents God’s ownership and protection. It is given to those who are loyal to God, especially in worship (Ezekiel 20:12, Revelation 14:1).
Mental and Emotional Preparation
1. Expect persecution
Jesus warned that His followers would be hated: “You will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22, NKJV). Christians must prepare to be misunderstood, accused, and even betrayed (Luke 21:16-17).
2. Develop emotional resilience
Now is the time to learn how to face rejection and hardship without losing faith. The Apostle Paul said, “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair” (2 Corinthians 4:8, NKJV).
3. Learn to trust God’s providence
Like Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon, we must trust that God is in control-even when we don’t understand. “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15, NKJV).
Physical and Practical Preparation
While spiritual readiness is most important, some practical steps are also wise.
1. Health and lifestyle reform
A sound body supports a strong mind. Daniel and his friends showed the benefits of a healthy lifestyle (Daniel 1:8-20). Avoiding harmful substances and eating healthfully enhances our ability to endure trials.
2. Simpler living
Those who are not overly attached to material things will find it easier to let go when circumstances change. Jesus told a rich young man to sell all and follow Him (Matthew 19:21), teaching the principle of detachment from worldly goods.
3. Learn practical skills
In times of crisis, skills such as gardening, cooking, first aid, and communication can be helpful. The early Christians shared resources and cared for one another (Acts 2:44-45).
4. Community and fellowship
God never intended us to go through trials alone. The early church met often for prayer and encouragement (Hebrews 10:24-25). Find or build a Bible believing community of Christians who are committed to God and to each other.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
Before the tribulation reaches its climax, God will pour out His Spirit in a special way. This is called the “latter rain” (Joel 2:28-29). Believers are urged to pray for and receive the Spirit now, so that they will be ready when greater power and boldness to evangelize are needed.
The Spirit will give guidance, courage, and wisdom. Jesus said the Spirit would “teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26, NKJV).
What Will Sustain Us During the Tribulation?
- God’s Word – “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11, NKJV).
- God’s Promises – “Fear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you” (Isaiah 41:10, NKJV).
- God’s Presence – “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20, NKJV).
- God’s Protection – “The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him” (Psalm 34:7, NKJV).
Avoiding the Mark of the Beast
One major issue in the tribulation is the mark of the beast (Revelation 13:16-17). This symbolic mark represents false worship and allegiance to an earthly power instead of God. To avoid the mark, we must understand true worship and keep God’s commandments, especially His seventh-day Sabbath, which is a sign of loyalty to the Creator (Exodus 20:8-11; Ezekiel 20:20).
Revelation 14:12 gives the description of the saints who overcome: “Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus” (NKJV). These two elements-obedience and faith-will protect us from deception.
The Role of End-Time Prophecy
Studying prophecy helps prepare our minds for what is coming. Jesus often said, “See, I have told you beforehand” (Matthew 24:25, NKJV). Knowing the prophetic sequence removes fear and brings hope.
The books of Daniel and Revelation are particularly important. They reveal the character of God, the plans of the enemy, and the final victory of Christ. Those who understand these truths will not be easily deceived.
Hope in the Midst of Tribulation
Though the Great Tribulation will be a time of darkness, believers are not without hope. Paul wrote, “We glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4, NKJV).
God promises to shorten the days for the elect’s sake (Matthew 24:22). The tribulation is not the end-it is the prelude to glory. Jesus will return in power and majesty to rescue His people and establish His kingdom.
Revelation 7:16-17 gives a beautiful promise to those who come out of the Great Tribulation: “They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore… for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (NKJV).
Conclusion
The Great Tribulation will test the world like never before. But God’s people have nothing to fear if they are in Christ. Preparation is not merely about storing food or fleeing cities; it is primarily about a heart surrendered to God, a life grounded in truth, and a faith that endures.
We must daily walk with Jesus, understand His Word, obey His commandments, and rely on the Holy Spirit. Those who do so will be able to stand firm, just as the saints described in Revelation: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death” (Revelation 12:11, NKJV).
Now is the time to prepare. Tomorrow may be too late. Let us heed the call: “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36, NKJV).

Very powerful message as a Christian you must be prepared for the second coming of the most high, let us worship him in truth and in faith so that at the end we will have our victory. amen
In my opinion, we are not in the “Last Days” yet. The bible says, ‘Perilous Times shall Come.’ That ‘Shall Come’ is not here yet. We can still purchase many items that will not be readily made available during tribulation. Such as gas, food medicines. travel, clothes, household items. and the like. Things that we take for granted will be in short supply or will be hard to come by during the great tribulation.
