Is transhumanism biblical?

Share

Transhumanism is a rapidly growing philosophical and technological movement that seeks to enhance human beings beyond their natural limitations. It proposes the use of technology to improve the human condition, extend life, augment intelligence, and even attain immortality through artificial means. Advocates of transhumanism dream of a future where human beings merge with machines, upload consciousness into computers, and escape the constraints of the human body.

While these goals sound futuristic and appealing to many, they raise serious ethical, theological, and spiritual concerns. One of the most pressing questions for Christians is whether transhumanism is compatible with the Bible.

This article explores the fundamental ideas behind transhumanism and evaluates them through the lens of Scripture. It discusses the origins and aims of transhumanism, the biblical view of humanity, the nature of life and death, and the destiny of mankind. Ultimately, it seeks to determine whether the philosophy and goals of transhumanism align with God’s plan as revealed in the Bible.

What Is Transhumanism?

Transhumanism is a movement that believes humans can and should use science and technology to overcome biological limitations. This includes:

  • Extending life or achieving immortality
  • Enhancing physical and cognitive abilities
  • Altering emotional states
  • Uploading minds to machines or creating digital consciousness
  • Merging humans with artificial intelligence

Transhumanists often believe that through such advancements, humanity can reach a “post-human” stage, where beings are no longer limited by mortality, illness, or even the traditional understanding of what it means to be human. Some transhumanists embrace the idea of becoming gods, seeing technology as the means to create a new version of humanity that surpasses the original.

This ideology is rooted in humanism-the belief that humans are capable of solving all problems through reason and science, without needing divine intervention. Transhumanism is often secular and materialistic, denying the supernatural and focusing on the here and now.

The Biblical View of Humanity

To understand whether transhumanism is biblical, we must first understand what the Bible says about humanity. The Bible teaches that human beings are created in the image of God.

Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV) says: “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

Humans are unique among all created beings. We are not just intelligent animals, but spiritual beings with moral responsibilities, created for relationship with God. Our value does not come from our physical or mental capabilities but from our identity as God’s image-bearers.

This foundational truth contradicts the transhumanist idea that we must alter ourselves to become something better. According to Scripture, humans are already made in the highest form possible-bearing the image of the eternal God. Though we are fallen and marred by sin, the answer is not to reinvent ourselves through technology, but to be spiritually restored by our Creator.

The Fall and the Search for Redemption

The Bible also explains why the human condition is marked by suffering, aging, and death. These are not merely biological failures, as transhumanists may suggest, but consequences of sin.

Romans 5:12 (NKJV) says: “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.” Because of Adam and Eve’s rebellion, sin entered the world and corrupted not only the human heart but also creation itself. Death, disease, and suffering are the result. Transhumanists attempt to fix these issues through science, but Scripture teaches that the true solution lies in spiritual regeneration.

Ephesians 2:1-5 (NKJV) states: “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins… But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us… made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).” Only through Jesus Christ can humanity be truly restored. The Bible does not teach that our problem is our biology but that our sin separates us from God. Transhumanism, by focusing only on physical enhancement, misses the root issue and offers a false salvation.

The Biblical View of the Body

Transhumanism often promotes the idea that the human body is outdated or flawed. In contrast, the Bible affirms the body as good and created by God for a purpose.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV) says: “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you… Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” Christians are called to honor God with their bodies, not discard them or radically alter them.

While medical advances and ethical treatments are good gifts from God, the idea of merging with machines or becoming something other than human goes beyond God’s design. The human body is not a mistake or an obstacle to be overcome, but a vessel through which we serve God. Furthermore, the resurrection of the body is a core Christian belief. At the end of time, God promises to raise our physical bodies, transform them, and make them incorruptible.

1 Corinthians 15:52-53 (NKJV) says: “For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” This immortality is not something we achieve through machines or science, but something God gives us through the resurrection of Christ. The Christian hope is not to escape the body but to have it redeemed.

The Desire for Immortality

One of the core aims of transhumanism is to achieve immortality through science-whether by stopping aging, replacing organs, or uploading consciousness. This reflects the deep human longing for eternal life. But the Bible teaches that eternal life cannot be achieved through human effort.

Romans 6:23 (NKJV) says:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Eternal life is not a technological feat but a gift from God, given to those who trust in Jesus. Any attempt to attain immortality apart from Him is futile and rebellious. In fact, the Bible shows that trying to become like God apart from His will is the very heart of sin.

Genesis 3:4-5 (NKJV):
“Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God…’”

This same lie is repeated in modern times through transhumanism: that we can become like gods through our own knowledge and efforts. But this path leads not to life, but to judgment.

The Bible declares that God alone has immortality. 1 Timothy 6:16 (NKJV) says: “who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.”

The Tower of Babel and Technological Rebellion

The story of the Tower of Babel offers a striking parallel to the goals of transhumanism.

Genesis 11:4 (NKJV) says: “And they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.’”

The people wanted to unite, reach the heavens, and make a name for themselves-essentially trying to establish a human-made utopia. But God saw their pride and confusion and intervened. He disrupted their efforts, not because He is against unity or progress, but because their ambition was rooted in self-exaltation and rebellion.

Transhumanism is another form of the same pride. It seeks to build a future without God, where humans reign supreme. Like Babel, it aims to reach the heavens through human achievement. But Scripture shows that such attempts will not succeed.

Psalm 2:4-5 (NKJV): “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure.”

The Dangers of Artificial Intelligence and Mind Uploading

A key component of transhumanism is the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that surpasses human intelligence. Some believe we will be able to upload our minds into computers and live forever in a digital world. But this concept denies the biblical understanding of the soul. The Bible teaches that humans are not merely minds or data.

Genesis 2:7 (NKJV) says: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” A man, which is a combination of dust and breath of God, is not something that can be transferred to a machine. No computer can contain what God alone created.

Furthermore, AI raises serious moral and spiritual questions. If machines become more intelligent than humans, who will govern them? What values will they follow? And who is ultimately in control? The Bible warns against relying on human inventions rather than God.

Isaiah 31:1 (NKJV): “Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help… But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!” Seeking salvation through machines instead of God leads to ruin.

God’s Plan for the Future

The Bible does not portray the future as a man-made utopia, but as a divine restoration. God promises to renew creation, remove sin, and dwell with His people forever-not because of their achievements, but because of His grace.

Revelation 21:3-4 (NKJV):
“And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men… And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.’”

This is the true hope of humanity-not transhumanism, but the kingdom of God. No amount of technological advancement can replace what only God can do.

Conclusion

Transhumanism offers a compelling vision of a better, longer life through technology. But when we examine it through the lens of Scripture, it becomes clear that it is not compatible with the Bible. It promotes a false understanding of humanity, denies the reality of sin, seeks salvation without God, and replaces divine truth with human ambition.

While medical progress and scientific discovery can be blessings when used rightly, the core philosophy of transhumanism stands in opposition to biblical truth. It seeks to build a future without God, much like the people at Babel. But the Bible shows that true transformation comes not through machines, but through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our bodies may decay, but God has promised a new, incorruptible body to those who trust in Him. Our minds may falter, but the mind of Christ renews us. Our world may fall apart, but God is making all things new. In the end, the choice is clear: we can pursue artificial immortality apart from God, or receive eternal life as a gift from Him.

Let us choose the way of life that leads to God, not the path of pride that leads to destruction. As Jesus said in John 14:6 (NKJV): “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
