Does Satan reside in hell today?

The common image of Satan ruling in hell, surrounded by flames and torturing the wicked, is deeply embedded in popular culture. This depiction is often reinforced through literature, media, and even some religious traditions. However, the Bible presents a very different picture. According to Scripture, the devil does not reside in hell today, nor is hell currently populated with the wicked dead. Hell, as understood biblically, is a future event reserved for after the final judgment. The Origin and Nature of Satan

Satan, also known as the devil, was originally created as a perfect and beautiful angel named Lucifer.

Lucifer’s Fall

According to Isaiah 14:12-14 (NKJV):

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God… I will be like the Most High.’”

Lucifer desired to elevate himself above God and was cast out of heaven as a result of his rebellion. Ezekiel 28:15-17 describes his fall due to pride and corruption.

The idea that the devil rules in hell is not found in the Bible but comes from non-biblical sources and traditions.

Dante’s Inferno and Popular Culture

The image of the devil presiding over hell likely owes more to literary works like Dante Alighieri’s Inferno than to Scripture. In this medieval work, the devil is portrayed as a grotesque figure who punishes souls in a fiery underworld. This portrayal has influenced art and theology but does not reflect biblical truth.

Hell is for the Devil’s Destruction, Not His Throne

Far from ruling over hell, the devil will be its chief victim. Matthew 25:41 (NKJV) says:

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'”

The lake of fire was never designed as a throne for the devil but as his destruction. He does not have dominion over it.
