The question of whether the 144,000 mentioned in the Book of Revelation are currently in heaven with the Lord is significant, particularly within the context of biblical eschatology and the doctrine of death and resurrection. To answer this question, it’s essential to explore what the Bible says about the state of the dead, the timing of rewards, and the specific identity of the 144,000.
Understanding the State of the Dead
According to the Bible, the dead are in a state of sleep, awaiting the resurrection. This concept is crucial in understanding why the 144,000 are not in heaven at this time. The belief that death is like sleep is supported by many scriptures. For instance, Ecclesiastes 9:5 (NKJV) states:
“For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.”
John 11:11-14 (NKJV) provides another perspective:
“These things He said, and after that He said to them, ‘Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.’ Then His disciples said, ‘Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.’ However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead.'”
Jesus uses the metaphor of sleep to describe death, indicating that the dead are not conscious or active but are in a state of rest until the resurrection. This understanding is further clarified in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (NKJV):
“But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.”
Paul refers to death as a state of sleep, which will end with the resurrection when those who have died in Christ will be brought back to life. This foundational understanding of death is critical when considering the fate of the 144,000.
The Timing of Rewards
The Bible teaches that rewards for believers, including those related to the resurrection and eternal life, are given at the second coming of Christ, not at the moment of death. This timing is crucial to understanding the current status of the 144,000. Revelation 22:12 (NKJV) emphasizes this point:
“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.”
The reward is associated with Christ’s return, not with the moment of death. This aligns with the idea that the dead are in a state of sleep, awaiting the resurrection and the associated rewards. Furthermore, 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (NKJV) describes the resurrection as follows:
“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
This passage confirms that the resurrection, and the rewards associated with it, occur at the second coming of Christ, not before. Therefore, the 144,000, like all believers, will receive their rewards at that time.
The Identity and Status of the 144,000
The 144,000 mentioned in Revelation 7:4 (NKJV) are described as follows:
“And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed.”
They are described as “sealed” servants of God, a symbolic representation of those who are faithful and protected during times of tribulation. The sealing indicates their special role and protection, but it does not imply that they are already in heaven. Revelation 14:1-3 (NKJV) provides further insight:
“Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth.”
This vision of the 144,000 with the Lamb on Mount Zion is a future event that occurs after the resurrection. It indicates their role in the final victory and the worship of God, rather than their current presence in heaven. Understanding their identity is essential to grasping their purpose in the end times.
The End Time Spiritual Leaders
The 144,000 are not in heaven today. Their ministry of preaching the truth will take place just before the second coming of Jesus. Their work can be understood when we look at the mission of the 12 apostles. At Jesus’ first coming, He selected 12 apostles to spread the gospel to the children of Israel. As stated in Matthew 10:5-6:
“These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: ‘Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’”
After Jesus’ ascension to heaven and the outpouring of the former rain on the 12 apostles, they were empowered and preached His truth at the Pentecost revival to the Jews that came to Jerusalem out of every nation under heaven (Acts 2:5). Hence, that day is often called the birthday of the Christian church.
In a similar manner, just before the second coming of Christ, God will pour His latter rain (the Holy Spirit) on 12 times 12,000 special people or the 144,000. These will preach the gospel to all the world as Jesus predicted in Matthew 24:14 and will cause a great revival of godliness. A significant number of people will be converted by their preaching.
Joel 2:28-29 provides a prophetic insight into this outpouring:
“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”
This prophecy indicates that the 144,000 will be instrumental in the final revival, leading many to Christ before His return.
The Believers Will Join the 144,000 in Preaching
It should be noted that the 144,000 are not the only ones that Jesus will use to spread His message at the end of days, just as the 12 apostles were not the only ones that spread the truth. For there were 120 believers in the upper room that led out also in the Pentecost revival (Acts 1:15). Additionally, Jesus didn’t only use the 12 disciples to preach in Israel, but He also sent out another group of 70 faithful individuals to teach the principles of His kingdom (Luke 10:1). The 144,000 are the spiritual leaders in this revival, but they are not the only ones preaching the final message. Many believers will join them in this mission, spreading the gospel and preparing the world for Christ’s return.
In summary, based on the biblical understanding of death as a state of sleep, and the timing of rewards and resurrection as occurring at the second coming of Christ, it is clear that the 144,000 are not currently in heaven with the Lord. They, like all believers, await the resurrection and the rewards that will be given at Christ’s return. The state of the dead, as depicted in Scripture, confirms that the dead saints are in a state of rest until the resurrection, when they will be united with Christ and receive their eternal rewards. The 144,000 are going to be the main spiritual leaders just before the coming of the Lord that will proclaim His truth to the whole world.
