Does it really matter which day we worship?

Many Christians today believe that it does not matter which day is set aside for worship, as long as one day is devoted to God. Others hold that the specific day God established-the seventh-day Sabbath-remains binding and significant.

This raises an important question: does it really matter which day we worship? Or has God given clear instruction that should not be altered?

To answer this, we must look carefully at Scripture. The Bible consistently presents the Sabbath not as a human invention, but as a divine institution established at creation, confirmed in the Ten Commandments, and upheld throughout biblical history.

The Sabbath Established at Creation

God Rested, Blessed, and Sanctified the Seventh Day

The origin of the Sabbath is found at creation:

“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:1-3, NKJV).

Three important actions define the Sabbath:

  • God rested on the seventh day
  • God blessed the seventh day
  • God sanctified (set apart) the seventh day

No other day received this distinction. The Sabbath was established before sin, before Israel, and for all humanity.

A Memorial of Creation

The Sabbath serves as a memorial of God’s creative work. Just as a birthday commemorates a specific event in time, the Sabbath points back to creation. It cannot be transferred to another day without losing its meaning.

The Sabbath as a Divine Command

The Fourth Commandment

God later reinforced the Sabbath in the Ten Commandments:

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy… the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God” (Exodus 20:8-10, NKJV).

This command:

  • Identifies a specific day-the seventh day
  • Calls for rest and holiness
  • Grounds its authority in creation

A Sign Between God and His People

God declared the Sabbath to be a sign:

“I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them” (Ezekiel 20:12, NKJV).

The Sabbath is not merely a day of rest; it is a sign of God’s relationship with His people.

God Does Not Change

The Unchanging Nature of God

Scripture emphasizes that God’s character and commands do not change:

“For I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6, NKJV).

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8, NKJV).

If God established the seventh day as holy, no human authority can alter that designation.

The Authority Belongs to God Alone

Only the Creator has the authority to define sacred time. Humans may choose to worship on any day, but they cannot transfer God’s blessing from the seventh day to another.

The Lesson of the Manna

A Test Before Sinai

Before the Ten Commandments were written on stone, God tested Israel regarding the Sabbath through the giving of manna:

“Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none” (Exodus 16:26, NKJV).

The Threefold Miracle

Each week, God performed a miracle:

  • A double portion fell on the sixth day
  • None fell on the seventh day
  • The sixth-day portion did not spoil

“On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread… and Moses said to them, ‘This is what the Lord has said: Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest’” (Exodus 16:22-23, NKJV).

This demonstrated that God was specific about the day.

Disobedience Was Not Overlooked

Some ignored God’s instruction:

“Now it happened that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none” (Exodus 16:27, NKJV).

God responded:

“How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws?” (Exodus 16:28, NKJV).

This shows that God does care about obedience in regard to the Sabbath.

Does It Matter Which Day We Keep?

The Argument of Convenience

Some believe any day can be set aside for worship. While daily worship is encouraged, the Sabbath is a specific command, not a flexible suggestion. God did not say, “Choose any day,” but rather, “Remember the Sabbath day.”

The Example of Cain and Abel

The story of Cain and Abel illustrates that worship must follow God’s instructions:

“And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offeringAbel also brought of the firstborn of his flock” (Genesis 4:3-4, NKJV).

God accepted Abel’s offering but rejected Cain’s. Why? Because Abel obeyed God’s instructions, while Cain chose his own way.

“Without shedding of blood there is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22, NKJV).

Cain’s offering was not what God required. This teaches that sincerity alone is not enough-obedience matters.

The Importance of Obedience

One Command Cannot Be Ignored

The Bible teaches that all commandments are interconnected:

“For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2:10, NKJV).

Choosing to disregard one command is still disobedience.

Love Expressed Through Obedience

“If you love Me, keep My commandments(John 14:15, NKJV).

True love for God leads to faithful obedience-not selective observance.

Victory Through Christ

“Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ(1 Corinthians 15:57, NKJV).

Through Christ, believers are empowered to live in obedience.

The Sabbath in the Life of Christ and the Apostles

Jesus Kept the Sabbath

“As His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day” (Luke 4:16, NKJV).

Jesus did not change the Sabbath. Instead, He honored it and restored its true meaning.

The Apostles Continued the Practice

Paul… reasoned with them from the Scriptures” on the Sabbath (Acts 17:2, NKJV).

The early church continued observing the seventh day.

A Call to Faithfulness

Worship in Spirit and Truth

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth(John 4:24, NKJV).

True worship aligns with God’s Word.

Testing Our Practices

“Test all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21, NKJV).

Believers are called to examine their practices in light of Scripture.

Keeping God’s Commandments

“Here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12, NKJV).

Faith and obedience go together.

Conclusion

The Bible clearly teaches that the seventh-day Sabbath was established by God at creation, affirmed in His law, and upheld throughout Scripture. It is not a human tradition but a divine institution.

While many believe that any day will suffice, Scripture shows that God is specific about His commands. The Sabbath is a sign, a memorial, and a sacred appointment set by the Creator Himself.

The question is not whether we can choose a different day, but whether we will follow God’s instruction or our own preference. May we, like Abel, choose obedience over convenience and honor God in all that He has commanded.
