The Name of God
The name of the God is recorded as YHWH in the Hebrew scriptures. The Divine Name was given to Moses. “I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD [YHWH] I did not make myself fully known to them” (Exodus 6:3). Jehovah is one of the possible pronunciations of YHWH.
The name of the Lord stands for His character. Moses wrote, “And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty…” (Exodus 34:6,7). Here, God’s name is described as consisting of three fundamental qualities—mercy, justice, and truth. Greatest emphasis is placed upon mercy because God’s relationship to us is based upon it (1 John 4:7–12).
