There are no recorded biblical instances of a high priest dying while performing his service in the Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement.

Leviticus 16 gives very detailed instructions for how the high priest was to enter God’s presence, including washing, special garments, sacrifices, incense, and blood. Yet Scripture never mentions a rope being tied around him, nor does it record a high priest dying inside and needing to be pulled out.

The Bible does show that God’s sanctuary service was extremely sacred and that disobedience could bring serious consequences. Nadab and Abihu, for example, died after offering “strange fire” before the Lord (Leviticus 10:1–2). However, they were priests, not high priests carrying out the Day of Atonement service.

So the tradition about tying a rope to the high priest does not appear to come from an actual biblical event. It seems to be a later tradition rather than something taught or recorded in Scripture.
