How Do I Pray and Talk to God?

Share

One of the greatest questions we can deal with in life is, “How do I pray? How do I pray and talk to God?”

Now, you could talk for hours about that, but I’m going to give you just one simple point on prayer.

A friend of mine was picking my wife and me up from the airport. And when he picked us up, he began to share with us about his struggle that he was going through.

This young man talks to God more than almost anybody that I know. Almost every conversation he begins with, “I was talking with the Father. I was talking with the Father.”

That’s just what he says. You would think the Father was right there with him at all times.

And as he said, “I was talking to the Father,” he said, “I’m struggling at work because there’s some good-looking girls there, and they’re interested in me. But I know that these girls are not walking with God as they should be, and I want a real Christian wife.”

And so he said, “I was talking with the Father, and I said, ‘Father, You’ve got to help me because these girls are fine!'”

And he was saying this in his prayer to God!

I began to laugh because I’ve never prayed like that before. My prayers had been more like, “Oh, Father, please help me not to sin.”

You know, I mean, kind of just covering up the reality of the sin.

And as I heard my friend share these things, it really clicked in my mind that I don’t pray like that. I didn’t at the time.

And I realized we have to talk to God as to a friend.

Jesus says, “I no longer call you only servants, but friends.”

And Jesus wants to take us into a deeper experience with Him so that we actually talk to Him as to a friend.

So I want to challenge you: You don’t have to memorize some script. You don’t have to memorize some prayer. But learn to talk to God.

Yes, confess your sins, but learn to talk to God as to a friend.
