Thank you for your question. Did you have a specific name you were wondering about? In general, names in the Bible often carry important meanings. Sometimes the meaning reflects a person’s character, circumstances of birth, future role, or something God wanted to communicate.

For example, Adam is related to the Hebrew word for “ground” or “earth,” fitting the fact that God formed him from the dust (Genesis 2:7). Eve means “life” or “living,” because she became “the mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20).

Abraham means “father of a multitude,” reflecting God’s promise that he would become the father of many nations (Genesis 17:5). Isaac means “laughter,” because Abraham and Sarah laughed when told they would have a son in old age (Genesis 17:17; 18:12; 21:6). Jacob is associated with “heel-holder” or “supplanter,” connected with his birth and later life (Genesis 25:26).

Sometimes God changed a person’s name to mark a new calling. Jacob became Israel, meaning something like “he struggles with God” or “God strives,” after wrestling with the angel (Genesis 32:28). Abram became Abraham, and Sarai became Sarah.

In the New Testament, Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua/Joshua and means “the LORD saves.” Matthew 1:21 explains the significance directly: “thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

Other examples include Samuel, associated with being “asked of God” (1 Samuel 1:20), Daniel, meaning “God is my judge,” Michael, meaning “Who is like God?” and Emmanuel, meaning “God with us” (Matthew 1:23).

So biblical names are often more than labels. Their meanings can add important context to the story, although not every biblical name is intended to carry a prophetic or theological message.
