It is completely appropriate to pray for healing when the body is in pain. The Bible says, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him” (James 5:14). God invites His children to bring their suffering, weakness, and pain to Him in faith.
Fasting can also be a meaningful spiritual practice. In Scripture, people fasted when they were humbling themselves before God, seeking His help, repentance, wisdom, or deliverance (Ezra 8:21–23; Daniel 9:3; Acts 13:2–3). Fasting does not force God to heal, but it can help the heart focus more deeply on Him. It is a way of saying, “Lord, I need You more than anything else.”
However, fasting should never be treated like a formula: “If I fast, then God must heal me.” God does heal, but He answers according to His wisdom, timing, and will. Paul prayed for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed, but God answered, “My grace is sufficient for thee” (2 Corinthians 12:7–9). Sometimes God heals instantly, sometimes gradually, sometimes through doctors and treatment, and sometimes He gives strength to endure.
If you are in physical pain, it is also wise to seek medical help. Luke, a faithful servant of God, was a physician (Colossians 4:14). God can work through prayer, lifestyle, medicine, and caring people. If you have diabetes, heart disease, are pregnant, take medications, or have any serious condition, speak with a doctor before fasting. Medical sources also warn that fasting is not safe for everyone and should be discussed with a healthcare professional when health conditions are involved.
A safe approach may be to begin with prayer, confession, Scripture, and a simple fast if your health allows. You might fast from one meal, from rich foods, or even from distractions such as entertainment, while spending extra time with God.
So yes, fasting and prayer can help spiritually, and God may use them in the healing journey. But your trust should be in God Himself, not in the act of fasting. He is compassionate, He hears your prayers, and He cares about your pain.
Have you ever experienced a time when prayer brought peace, strength, or healing while you were suffering?
