The Sorcerer and the Wizard

A sorcerer is a person who practices sorcery: wizard sorcery : wizard. According to Webster’s Dictionary, the word “sorcery” means “magic; enchantment; witchcraft; divination by the assistance or the supposed assistance of evil spirits, or the power of commanding evil spirits.”

God’s word clearly condemns all such practices that contact demonic forces. The Bible indicates that people at the end of time will be especially involved in such practices: “Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts” (Revelation 9:21). “For by thy sorceries were all nations deceived” (Revelation 18:23).

Sorcerers and Wizards Are Not Prophets

In the Old Testament, the Lord warns against following sorcerers and Wizards: “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do” (Deuteronomy 18:10-14).

“Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times . . . Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 19:26, 31) “And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people . . . A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them” (Leviticus 20:6, 27).

And to protect His children from demons, the Lord commanded, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” (Exodus 22:18). Notice that God doesn’t make any distinction between good witches and evil witches. Every witch, every wizard, and every sorcerer in the Bible is evil in the sight of God.

In the New Testament, we read that sorcerers where children of the devil, “But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, and said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?” (Acts 13:8-10).

Those that practice sorcery will not inherit the kingdom of God. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).

Rather than seek communication with sorcerer and wizards, we have been commanded to separate ourselves from them. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11 also Isaiah 8:19).

The early believers when converted from paganism, burned all the books containing this evil (Acts 19:18-20). Yet, we have people today entertaining themselves with it. David advised, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me” (Psalms 101:3).

While Witchcraft is a great sin in the sight of God, there is no sin that is too great for God’s forgiveness. God sent His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to pay for all our sins: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). And He invites all sinners to repent of their wickedness and walk in His holy path (Acts 3:19).
