With the pope Benedict resigning, is this a sign that we are coming closer to the end of this world?

Hello R,

Thank you for contacting BibleAsk.

The news of the pope Benedict XVI resigning was most unexpected to all. The move was considered unusual since in modern times, all popes have stayed in office until death.

It was announced that this pope would resign the papacy on 28 February 2013, as a result of his advanced age, thus becoming the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415. At the age of 85 years and 318 days on the effective date of his retirement, he was the fourth-oldest person to hold the office of pope.

You may be referring to one of the interpretations to Revelation 17 shared by a popular religious site that suggested that the pope coming after Pope Benedict XVI would be the last one. Incidentally, the Catholic Church also say that St. Malachy, in 1139 AD, predicted a long list of 112 Popes who were to rule the Catholic Church from Malachy’s time till the end of time. Pope Benedict XVI is currently pope # 111 on the list which leaves one more pope to come before the end.

In any case, if we study carefully the signs that Jesus gave in Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21 and the prophecies in the books of Daniel and Revelation, we will be certain that we are certainly living at the very end of Earth’s history. And since we don’t know when we will face death, we need to be ready at all times.

In His service,
