Echad – Strong’s Hebrew: 259. אֶחָד – means one unit that consists of more than one (ex. Genesis 1:5, 9; 2:21, 24; 3:22; Deuteronomy 6:4; Numbers 13:23; Ezekiel 37:17).
Yachid – Strong’s Hebrew: 3173. יָחִיד – means one and one only (ex. Jeremiah 6:26; Genesis 22:2,12,16; Judges 11:34; Psalm 25:16; Proverbs 4:3; Amos 8:10; Zechariah 12:10).
God referred to Himself with the word “Echad.” “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one (Echad)” (Deuteronomy 6:4). This means He is a complex Being; He is plural. If Yahweh wanted to say I am one and only one, He would have used the word (Yachid).
References to the 3 Persons of the Godhead in the OT
1- “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:1, 2). Here, is a reference to God and the Holy Spirit in the work of creation.
2- “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). The plural “us” was considered by the early church scholars as pointing to the three Persons of the Godhead. The statements that man was to be made in “our” image leads to the understanding that those communicating must be persons of the same Godhead.
3- “Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil” (Genesis 3:22). The word “us” necessitates the presence of at least two persons communing together.
4- “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech” (Genesis 11:7). Here, the use of the pronoun “us” again, indicates the participation of at least two persons of the Godhead.
5- “Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heaven” (Genesis 19:24). Here, we see two members of the Godhead acting on the Judgement of Sodom and Gomorrah.
6- “I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated… I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him” (Daniel 7:9, 13). Here, God the Father is present with the Son in a prophetic vision.
7- “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You” (Psalm 2:7). Here, the Father acknowledges Jesus as His Son.
8- “Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions” (Psalm 45:7). Here, God the Father has anointed the Son as the Messiah.
9- “The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool” (Psalm 110:1). Substituting the Hebrew words for “Lord,” we have the following, “Yahweh said unto ’adoni.” According to Jesus’ words affirming His deity, the dialogue took place between God the Father and God the Son (Matthew 22:41-45).
10- “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Here, Jesus the Son is no less God than the Father. He was one with the Father from the days of eternity (Psalms 90:2; Proverbs 8:22–30; Micah 5:2).

Both the Old and the New Testaments reveal the 3 persons of the Godhead working unitedly for the salvation of man. “From the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever” (Revelation 1:4–6 ).
