All right, so Kennedy asks, what shall I do to overcome generation curse?
Speaker 2
Great question, Kennedy. And this is definitely something that we spent time speaking about and studying when we’ve been working on a documentary on mental health because it’s really interesting how what science studies and what the Bible.
Speaker 3
Says at times can align. And ah, let’s let’s talk a little bit about it. I want to start with first this.
Speaker 2
Concept that we repeat over and over.
Speaker 3
Here in Bible ask, which is you can’t do it in your own strength. And that should be good news because.
Speaker 2
God is there to offer help. God wants to break us from all the generational curses, all the things that seem to stack the ODS against us.
Speaker 3
But God can look past all that, break us out of it and start us onto a new cycle of being in alignment with Him and his way. So let’s look at verse Exodus 34, starting at verse six. And it reads and the Lord passed before him Moses and proclaimed the Lord the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long.
Speaker 2
Suffering and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.
Speaker 3
By no means clearing the guilty, visiting.
Speaker 2
The iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the.
Speaker 3
Third and fourth generation.
Speaker 2
So here we have an interesting contrast where God says I bless people for a thousand generations, but the wicked get.
Speaker 3
Punished the third and fourth generation. What does that mean?
Speaker 2
Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon.
Speaker 3
The children and the children’s children to the third and fourth generation?
Speaker 2
Now, a lot of people think that.
Speaker 3
This means God is going to take.
Speaker 2
The sin of one person and then.
Speaker 3
Punish his kids, punish his grandkids great.
Speaker 2
Grandkids and great great great grandkids all.
Speaker 3
Because again, the great great great grandfather sinned. That’s not how God works. There’s a different meaning, but let’s prove it. Ezekiel 1820 god says, the soul who sins shall die.
Speaker 2
The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear.
Speaker 3
The guilt of the son.
Speaker 2
The righteousness of the righteous shall be.
Speaker 3
Upon himself and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. So God, if you sin, that’s on you, nobody else.
Speaker 2
Likewise.
Speaker 3
You’Re not legally in a sense.
Speaker 2
Guilty for the sins of your parents.
Speaker 3
Or them before them. But what now is meant though by visiting the iniquity to multiple generations? Again, I’ll explain it really I think.
Speaker 2
God is talking about the consequences of.
Speaker 3
These things or, or for example, getting the habits going.
Speaker 2
So if if one one person starts.
Speaker 3
Drinking, the great great great great grandfather starts drinking in this drunk, his habits.
Speaker 2
The things he’s done might lead to that.
Speaker 3
His son will be a drunkard and then his grandsons will be drunkards and.
Speaker 2
Then it’ll go like that.
Speaker 3
And I think, I believe from studying.
Speaker 2
The Bible and we’ll talk more about.
Speaker 3
It, that God will break that cycle. God says after third or fourth generation.
Speaker 2
I will intervene and break that cycle.
Speaker 3
So that.
Speaker 2
There’Ll be a chance again.
Speaker 3
Within that family to come more alignment with me. That’s why I believe this verse is vain, and so it should be a.
Speaker 2
Promise, a great one, to know that.
Speaker 3
God breaks the cycles, god breaks these curses.
Speaker 2
That’s how God is.
Speaker 3
He really wants to free us from our past. To me, that’s one of the greatest gospel messages, is that we are not stuck with our past, even our own personal past. We can die to and become a new creation.
Speaker 2
Here’s jesus’s attitude.
Speaker 3
Overall, John nine, starting at verse one.
Speaker 2
Now, as Jesus passed by, he saw a man who was blind from birth.
Speaker 3
And his disciples asked him, asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his.
Speaker 2
Parents sinned, but that the worst of.
Speaker 3
God should be revealed in Him. I think this is just beautiful. This is the mindset we should have.
Speaker 2
We’re not supposed to be judging, figuring out, okay, why is this person this way? They must be a sinner. Their parents are sinners.
Speaker 3
We start judging, judging, judging.
Speaker 2
Rather, we should always look at these things, look at any of our problems.
Speaker 3
Any of our generational curses, as an opportunity for God to be glorified.
Speaker 2
We talk about, can God use gentiles?
Speaker 3
Can he use non believers?
Speaker 2
Even God can use generational curses to be glorified because he can take him.
Speaker 3
Away, he can break the chain. And then people would be like, whoa, how did that happen?
Speaker 2
Where did this transformation come from?
Speaker 3
And God can be the only explanation. So get excited about your generational curses because God can do amazing things with them. Then we come to Galatians three, starting at verse 13. Paul writes, christ has redeemed us from.
Speaker 2
The curse of the law, having become.
Speaker 3
A curse for us.
Speaker 2
For it is written curses everyone who.
Speaker 3
Hangs on a tree, that the blessing.
Speaker 2
Of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles.
Speaker 3
In Christ Jesus that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Speaker 2
So of course, it’s talking about the curse of the law.
Speaker 3
The Law ultimately brings death, and God can free us from this cycle of breaking the Law and us deserving to die.
Speaker 2
But I believe this also applies when.
Speaker 3
It comes to generational curses.
Speaker 2
Christ suffered on the cross. He took all the beating, took shame.
Speaker 3
Punishment, you name it. All these things on him. And now he can say, I own it, it’s happened to me.
Speaker 2
I could forgive it.
Speaker 3
I have a right to abolish it. And he can break that chain because.
Speaker 2
He became your generational curse in your family.
Speaker 3
He can take it away and replace in our hearts the Holy Spirit. Give us the Holy Spirit. And why is that important? Why do we need the Holy Spirit.
Speaker 2
Because that’s really the key to breaking.
Speaker 3
The generational curse cycle we see in Ezekiel 36 26. Even though this is Old Testament, this.
Speaker 2
Is from the Old Testament, but it.
Speaker 3
Is New Testament Testament theology and this is the heart and secret to how God will break the generational curse. Ezekiel 36 26 says I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you. I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh so God will, you know, we, we have our desires, we have the habits, these things that.
Speaker 2
We always want and crave and can’t get away from.
Speaker 3
But God says I can work in.
Speaker 2
Miracle where it’s like that heart is gone. And now you have new desires, you.
Speaker 3
Have new cravings, you’ll have new interests, new habits that will then get you.
Speaker 2
Into alignment with God, that will get you loving other people, that will get you loving God and you’re drawing closer to Him in relationship rather than the.
Speaker 3
Wrong things distracting you. And finally, it’s always important to bear in mind how just patient and forgiving God is. We’ll still continue to mess up probably.
Speaker 2
I mean just ODS are right knowing.
Speaker 3
Humans but God, as he says in.
Speaker 2
One John one nine, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just.
Speaker 3
To forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Speaker 2
This is the God we serve and.
Speaker 3
He wants to cleanse us and to cleanse us.
Speaker 2
God doesn’t want us to have to keep taking a bath every single day to wash off our sins. I mean, in a sense we have.
Speaker 3
To, but God will love us to get to the point where we just don’t sin anymore.
Speaker 2
He really wants to purge in cleanliness.
Speaker 3
The filthiness from us. And to do that does require changing our heart.
Speaker 2
God wants to see that generational sin.
Speaker 3
Or that generational curse broken in all of us. So this is one of those things.
Speaker 2
Where you can have a tremendous amount.
Speaker 3
Of confidence in knowing that God has.
Speaker 2
Your back and will be working with.
Speaker 3
You to do it. The question is just how will he.
Speaker 2
Go about doing it and how long will it take? It might not happen in the way.
Speaker 3
We expect or in the time frame we expect.
Speaker 2
But what’s important is continuing to depend on God. To turn to God to ask for.
Speaker 3
It, to desire it, yearn for it.
Speaker 2
Even continuing to ask God to give.
Speaker 3
Us the desire for breaking that curse.
Speaker 1
And to submit to his will in what we’re asking him to do. If we don’t choose to shift from submitting to the Spirit that is not, that is adversely controlling us to submitting to the Spirit of God, we won’t ever be able to break that curse. But if we are willing to submit to God’s will for us and God’s spirit and the work of the spirit of the Lord within our life, then we’re able to break that.
Speaker 3
Amen. Tina, any thoughts?
Speaker 4
Yeah, I love what you shared. I think that was really beautiful. And I always go back because generational curses is something that I’ve kind of struggled with myself because there’s things in my family. If you look at any family, we all have skeletons in our closet and that sort of thing. And there’s things that I was like, lord, I feel like I’m cursed in this area. And God showed me something really beautiful in his law. When the Bible says there’s wonderful things in thy law, it’s so true. And then you go to the Ten Commandments in Exodus chapter 20 and you look at the Second Commandment. So Exodus chapter 20 and verse four, the Second Commandment says, you shall not make for yourself a carved image. So any graven images, any likeness of anything in the heaven above or the earth beneath that is in the water under the earth. So God basically says, don’t worship anything but me. God is very clear. And so he says you should not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.
Speaker 4
Very clear, those who hate me. So oftentimes parents pass down hatred for something that God loves. And that’s where the problem is, is there is a hatred for good. And so it says, but verse six is key, but showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. So if we turn from those things that God hates, if we turn from sin and we turn to love God and to keep his commandments, that’s when those chains are broken and that curse is gone because we no longer are under the curse. We love God. We obey his commandments. We are under his blessing then, and we’re under his protection. And that’s how you overcome. That’s how at least I’ve learned to overcome sin, is by knowing God, loving God and obeying God. And when you walk in his will, yeah, that curse can’t touch you because you’re under Christ and the wicked one cannot touch Him. And so I just want to encourage you that as you follow God and as you and this isn’t just like a promise somewhere in the Bible. This is Ten Commandments written by God’s, finger in stone.
Speaker 4
This does not change ever. So you can take this to the bank that if you love God and you obey God and you do these things to give your heart to God, just like those practical things you guys were sharing, by all means, God, wipes away that curse. You are not under a curse anymore. You are God’s child. And so praise the Lord. He can absolutely, like you’re saying, turn a curse into a blessing and do amazing things through even our hardest situation. So praise God we serve an awesome and amazing God. Amen.
