The practice of making New Year’s resolutions goes back over 3,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. The Babylonians started their year with a clean slate and a good conscience by doing good deeds such as returning a kindness, righting a wrong or giving charitable gifts.
There is just something about the start of a new year that gives us the feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning for peace and prosperity.
The most common New Year’s resolutions are commitments to quit smoking, to stop drinking, to manage money more wisely, and to spend more time with family. These resolutions have good rewards.
But there is one New Year’s resolution that stands above all others because of the unbelievable rewards it can give you:
“hundred fold now… and… eternal life”!
“There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life” Mark 10:29,30.
What venture in this life could ever give you “hundred fold now …and…eternal life” as a reward?
Following God is the most profitable resolution you can ever make. Nothing can be even compared to it. Sure, there will be trials but you will never be alone. These trials will be stepping stones to your growth. The Lord will be with you in every step of the way. In fact, God promises you all the strength you need so that your resolution will be fulfilled “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength” Philippians 4:13. You are promised all the help you need in every difficulty.
If God is the center of your New Year’s resolution, then you’ve got it made 🙂
