Stigmata is a 1999 supernatural horror film starring Patricia Arquette as an atheist hairdresser who was afflicted with the stigmata after acquiring a rosary formerly owned by a deceased Italian priest who himself suffered from the phenomena.
What is “Stigmata”?
Today, the word Stigmata stands for the wounds or bodily marks in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus and they are normally found on the hands, ankles, chest, head, shoulders, and back. The person experiencing stigmata often develops wounds or blood blisters that will not heal.
So, are the marks of stigmata from God or the devil?
Most stigmata occur in Roman Catholic circles. Stigmatists believe that by bearing stigmata, they are actually suffering with Mary, honoring Christ, and helping to pay the penalty for others’ wrongdoing. They believe that God Himself is inflicting these wounds supernaturally.
Sadly, the phenomenon of Stigmata goes against the clear teachings of the Bible and the very mind of God. Stigmata considers Christ’s death as insufficient and that humans are required to suffer Christ’s wounds all over again. But, the Bible clearly teaches that Christ died once and His blood on the cross is sufficient to save all who come to the Father in faith. We are not saved any other way but through faith in the blood of Christ:
” For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16.
” Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12.
Saved sinners know there is NOTHING they can do to save themselves. No ritual, no suffering and no human work can save them. When sinners accept Christ’s finished work on the cross they are made new. Only the blood of Jesus can make people clean.
Supernatural activity is not always from God. Any supernatural activity that violates the teachings of the Bible is from the devil. So, the Stigmata phenomenon is in reality deceptive wounds inflicted by Satan.
“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9.
This verse says that the devil is able to work signs and lying wonders. He would be capable of causing the stigmata, especially if people want it because they think that it is a sign of God’s favor.
The Bible nowhere instructs anyone to have a stigmata. Jesus suffered the wounds so we would not have to.
