Muslims Claim the Bible Has Been Tampered With
Muslims accuse Christians of corrupting the Bible. For example, a Muslim hadith (canonized tradition about the words and deeds of Muhammad) states: “O community of Muslims, how is it that you seek wisdom from the people of the book? Your book, brought down upon his prophet—blessings and peace of God upon him—is the latest report about God. You read a book that has not been distorted, but the people of the book, as God related to you, exchanged that which God wrote, changing the book with their hands” (Sahih Muslim). The phrase the “people of the book” refers to Jews and Christians.
But Muslims produce no credible evidence to support their claim when in fact the Qur’an praises the Bible, and literary evidence verifies the Bible’s authenticity. Let’s look at the facts.
First: The Qur’an Praises the Bible
(1)What did the Qur’an say about the Old Testament?
“We gave Moses the Book and followed him up with a succession of messengers; We gave Jesus the son of Mary Clear (Signs) and strengthened him with the holy spirit. Is it that whenever there comes to you a messenger with what ye yourselves desire not, ye are puffed up with pride?- Some ye called impostors, and others ye slay!” Al-Qur’an, 002.087 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])
“We did aforetime grant to the Children of Israel the Book the Power of Command, and Prophethood; We gave them, for Sustenance, things good and pure; and We favoured them above the nations.” Al-Qur’an, 045.016 (Al-Jathiya [Crouching])
“We did indeed aforetime give the Book to Moses: be not then in doubt of its reaching (thee): and We made it a guide to the Children of Israel.” Al-Qur’an, 032.023 (As-Sajda [The Prostration, Worship, Adoration])
“Or do they envy mankind for what Allah hath given them of his bounty? but We had already given the people of Abraham the Book and Wisdom, and conferred upon them a great kingdom.” Al-Qur’an, 004.054 (An-Nisa [Women])
(2)What did the Qur’an say about the Psalms?
“We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.” Al-Qur’an, 004.163 (An-Nisa [Women])
“Before this We wrote in the Psalms, after the Message (given to Moses): My servants the righteous, shall inherit the earth.” Al-Qur’an, 021.105 (Al-Anbiya [The Prophets])
(3)What did the Qur’an say about the New Testament?
“Then, in their wake, We followed them up with (others of) Our messengers: We sent after them Jesus the son of Mary, and bestowed on him the Gospel; and We ordained in the hearts of those who followed him Compassion and Mercy. But the Monasticism which they invented for themselves, We did not prescribe for them: (We commanded) only the seeking for the Good Pleasure of Allah; but that they did not foster as they should have done. Yet We bestowed, on those among them who believed, their (due) reward, but many of them are rebellious transgressors. Al-Qur’an, 057.027 (Al-Hadid [The Iron])
“And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.” Al-Qur’an, 005.046 (Al-Maeda [The Table, The Table Spread])
“When Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said: “Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me.” Al-Qur’an, 043.063 (Az-Zukhruf [Ornaments of Gold, Luxury])
(4) The Qur’an confirms the Bible:
“If thou wert in doubt as to what We have revealed unto thee, then ask those who have been reading the Book from before thee: the Truth hath indeed come to thee from thy Lord: so be in no wise of those in doubt.” Al-Qur’an, 010.094 (Yunus [Jonah])
(5)The Qur’an confirms that those that follow the Bible are accepted by God:
“But why do they come to thee for decision, when they have (their own) law before them?- therein is the (plain) command of Allah; yet even after that, they would turn away. For they are not (really) People of Faith.” Al-Qur’an, Ayat 43, Surah Ma’idah
“It was We who revealed the law (to Moses): therein was guidance and light. By its standard have been judged the Jews, by the prophets who bowed (as in Islam) to Allah’s will, by the rabbis and the doctors of law: for to them was entrusted the protection of Allah’s book, and they were witnesses thereto: therefore fear not men, but fear me, and sell not my signs for a miserable price. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers. Al-Qur’an, 005.043-044 (Al-Maeda [The Table, The Table Spread])
“Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel. Al-Qur’an, 005.047 (Al-Maeda [The Table, The Table Spread])
“Those who believe (in the Qur’an), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians and the Christians,- any who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness,- on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve Al-Qur’an, 005.069 (Al-Maeda [The Table, The Table Spread])
“Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration.” Al-Quran, 3:113 Ayah al-Imran
“Strongest among men in enmity to the believers wilt thou find the Jews and Pagans; and nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, “We are Christians”: because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant.” Al-Quran, 5:82 Ayah al-Ma`idah (The Table, The Table Spread)
(6)Muslims are called to believe the Holy Books of the Bible that were given before Islam:
“O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray.” Al-Qur’an, 004.136 (An-Nisa [Women])
“We believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another among them, and to Allah do we bow our will (in Islam).” Al-Qur’an, 003.084 (Aal-E-Imran [The Family of Imran])
“Say ye: “We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah (in Islam).” Al-Qur’an, 002.136 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])
“The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. “We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His messengers.” And they say: “We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys.” Al-Qur’an, 002.285 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])
“And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, “We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam).” Al-Qur’an, 029.046 (Al-Ankaboot [The Spider])
“O People of the Book! ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord.” It is the revelation that cometh to thee from thy Lord, that increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. But sorrow thou not over (these) people without Faith. Al-Qur’an, 005.068 (Al-Maeda [The Table, The Table Spread])
Second: Literary Evidence Verifies the Bible’s Authenticity
(1) Since the Bible could not have been changed before or during Muhammad’s time, the only other possible time for corruption was after his death. But clear scholarly evidence proves that up to the twenty-first century, nothing of doctrinal significance differs in the Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible. Aside from grammar and spelling variation, the Bible today is essentially the same Bible with that at the time of Muhammad. In recent years, manuscripts (ex. The Dead Sea Scrolls) of Scripture dating back to the third century B.C . have been discovered which explicitly verify the accuracy of the Bible we have today.

(2) Also, by the time Muhammad was born, thousands of Bibles existed around the world in different languages. If some people did corrupt the Bible, how could they have destroyed all the accurate Scriptures exposing such deceit in all parts of the world?
