Britain’s Peter Higgs and Belgium’s Francois Englert won this year’s Nobel Prize for physics for predicting the existence of the Higgs boson particle that explains how elementary matter attained the mass to form stars and planets in the universe. The insight has been hailed as one of the most important discovery in understanding the cosmos. Half a century after the scientists’ original prediction, the new building block of nature was detected in 2012 at the European Organization for the Nuclear Research center’s giant underground particle smasher near Geneva.
Their work shows how elementary particles inside the atoms gain mass by interacting with an invisible field pervading all of space.
I will give a brief overview on what they claim:
- The Universe was born with a Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago, releasing a lot of energy.
- This energy was symmetrical, uniform in space and time. This symmetry broke in less than a second’s time.
- The particles became non- uniform because they had acquired mass. This was due to Higgs mechanism.
This Nobel could be a moment of cheer for atheists. Some may be telling that, they have got some clues to refute the argument of a 6000 year old account of Biblical creation. But, let’s look at what the Bible says:
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day”.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
Now, if you look at these verses, there are two heavens and two earths, one at the beginning and the other at the time when our planet was designed. What does it mean?
It may be that the components of the heavens and the earth were made even before the day God created our planet as we see it today. That may be the reason why the Big Bang concept is getting the age of our Universe as 13.8 billion years. There is also no mention of when the water was made, rather it says that the Earth was void and formless and God’s spirit was hovering over the face of the waters. It may be same with the water as well.
In fact, Big bang has already given a hint that our Universe had a beginning which is in alignment with the Biblical account of creation. Higgs boson further claims that our Universe is pervaded by an invisible field of energy and they call it by the name ‘dark matter’ or ‘dark energy’ which is still a mystery for the scientific community. It seems that, eventually both the Big bang and the Higgs boson are going to certify the Biblical account of creation as one of the most probable one, though the scientific world is not going to accept it publicly.
Indeed God is asking us back:
“Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And darkness, where is its place,
20 That you may take it to its territory,
That you may know the paths to its home?
21 Do you know it, because you were born then,
Or because the number of your days is great?”
Will we find it any day?
