More Than One God? – Psalms 96

Some say that there are more than one God according to Psalms 96:4,5 which says, “For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.” But here the Islamist is talking about the false gods, the creation of men. These pagan gods, and goddesses are mentioned in the Old as well as the New Testament. These include: Baal (Judges 2:13), Dagon (1 Samuel 5:2), Molech (Exodus 18:21) and Diana (Acts 19:27), etc.

The Lord declares in the first commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). For some, money is their god. They love it and live for it, but it is a mere object and cannot create or save. Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24).

The prophet Isaiah writes that the Creator is the only true God, “For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else” (ch. 45:18). God is the only Power in the Universe.

The One God goes on to say in the next chapter of Isaiah, “To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like? They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship. They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.”

“Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors. Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46:5-10).

Man-Made Gods

The Bible states clearly that any idle is merely a statue or work of men’s hands and has no power whatsoever:

“But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them” (Psalm 115:3-8). The man-made idols or graven images can’t be even compared with the true God who has power to create.

“Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them. Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any. They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed. Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?” (Isaiah 44:6-10 also 44:17-20).

False Worship

Since the beginning, the devil has tried to deceive people into believing that they can be gods. He said to Eve that if she ate of the forbidden tree “you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5). Unfortunately, when she broke God’s commandment she fell. And all the misery and death we see in the world today is the direct result of disobedience.

Some even believe that worshiping higher beings such as angels is OK. But this is also another form of false worship. The Bible warns, “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshiping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind” (Colossians 2:18). The Bible teaches that Satan can take on the form of an angel of light to deceive people (2 Corinthians 11:14).

A true angel of God would not accept worship and instead would point the worshiper to the true God. “And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God” (Revelation 22:8-9).

It is important to get to know the true One God the Creator of heaven and Earth, as this knowledge leads to life and salvation. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). A daily relationship with the Creator through the study of His Word and prayer helps the believer get ready for eternity (John 15:4).
