Is it scriptural to put conditions on how to use a gift that we give?

William is asking, please. I would like to ask something, but I think describing it. I have given you something for free, no debt, but I have attached a condition in which it must be used. If that condition is transgressed, then something should be set in motion. You asked something from me as a gift, and I gave it to you for freely, but with a condition. And if that condition is transgressed, something should be set in motion. Are these scriptural? And will the thing meant to be set in motion stand against the receiver of the gift?

Okay, well, my friend William, thank you for reaching out to us and sharing with us this question, kind of a story that’s kind of going on. I’m not sure if this is something that was said to you, something that was that you came into a relationship with somebody else that is talking to you. I’m not exactly sure the circumstance of what you’re describing, but I would say that this is not something scriptural. This is not something I see as far as something in the Bible. Like, I don’t know if you thought you heard something like this in a sermon, this wouldn’t be something I would find in the Bible per se. The only thing it kind of reminds me of as far as something that is scriptural is the main gift that the Bible does talk about, which is salvation. In Romans, chapter six, verse 23, it says, for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. So the gift of God that God desires to give everybody is eternal life. Now, is there a condition upon this gift? Yes, there is. Kind of like what you’re saying, but a little bit different.

And the best example I could think of showing this is in the Book of Matthew, chapter 18, where Jesus gives a parable. So this isn’t literal. This is just kind of a story to describe a principle. And so again, in Matthew chapter 18, and this goes from verses 23 down to verse 30, see, basically down to the end. So I’ll summarize it just because it’s kind of a long story. But basically what happens is there’s a king who has servants and one of his servants owes him some crazy amount of money. Basically, it would be like today, like $100 million. It would be an absurd amount of money. And so it says basically $10,000 excuse me, in verse 26, but the servant fell before him and worshiped and said, Lord, have patience with me and I’ll pay it all. And so because this servant came to him and begged him to have mercy, the king forgave him. But in verse 28 it says, but that same servant went out and found one of his fellow servants which owed him 100 pence. So like $100 or something like that. And he laid hands on him and took him by the throat and says, pay me what you owe.

And in verse 29 it says the fellow servant fell on his feet the same way that he came before the king and said have patience with me and I’ll pay you all. But the difference between this servant and the king is that this servant who was forgiven $100 million, basically crazy amount of money, it says in verse 30 he would not, but he went and cast him into prison until he should pay all the debt. And so in verse 31 it says and so when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry and they told their Lord basically the king all that was done. And in verse 32 it says and then his Lord after that called him and said, you wicked serve it. I forgave you all the debt because you asked me and says should not you have had compassion on your fellow servant and had pity on you? And his Lord was angry and delivered him to the tormentors till he should pay all that was due to him. And so likewise our heavenly Father will also do to you if you do not from your heart forgive every brother their trespasses.

So basically the principle here is that God has given us a gift of eternal life because the wages of sin was death. We’ve all sinned, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But we can all be right with God through Jesus by accepting his gift of salvation. However, we can lose that gift if we then in turn do not demonstrate that same love that God has demonstrated towards us. If we accept God’s forgiveness for our sins, how then can we not forgive somebody else who the sins we’ve transgressed against God cannot compare to the sins somebody’s transgressed against us. Our sins have caused God his only begotten son. So how can we then not forgive somebody else the petty sins that they’ve sinned against us? And maybe they were big sins, I don’t know what sins have been transgressed against somebody else. But even still nothing compares to what we sinned against God. And so this is the only thing comparable, I think kind of to what you’re saying. And so the main thing is to know that God is love. And with the same love that God has given us to say mercy and forgiveness God has given us, we should show that same love, mercy and forgiveness to other people.

Speaker 2

And so I just want to close with a verse in one Peter, chapter four, verse ten. And basically this is talking about the gift that God has given us and how we should be using it, which is of course the gift of eternal life, the gift of salvation. And says as every man has received the gift, even so minister the same to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of god. And so he goes on the next verse to basically say, so if you can speak the word of God, if you can teach, teach the word of God. If whatever way that you are given talents and opportunities, use it to glorify God. Use it to share the gospel and the gift of salvation with others. Because if you think that receiving the gift of salvation is just for you to selfishly hoard it, then you’re very much mistaken of what gift you’ve been given. The gift of salvation from God is not to keep it to yourself, but to share it lovingly with those around you and to demonstrate the character of love, mercy and forgiveness to other people that God has shown you.

Speaker 2

So I hope that answers your question, William. And I pray that you continue to look to God in His Word to know that the character that God wants you to develop, which is a character of his love. Jeremy, any other thoughts? Yes. Maybe so.

Speaker 3

Okay, we’re good.

Speaker 1

That was great phrase, guy.

Speaker 3

And Khalil has a response. He says, our testimony is that the Lord is our God. And even though we don’t understand, but tragic incidents help others see the greatness of our faith.

Speaker 2

Amen. Amen.
