Is the concept of soul mate Biblical?

Soul Mate

The concept of soul mate suggests that there is only one perfect person for everyone. Those that promote this idea say that God created only one woman for each man. And that unhappy marriages are the result of not having that one perfect match. Because of this concept, many seek divorce when they face difficulties because they think that they have failed to find their soul mate. But this is not a biblical teaching.

The Lord teaches that once a couple unite in marriage they have a holy bond between them, “A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate” (Mark 10:7-9). The apostle Paul speaks about the divine bond between a man and a woman (Romans 7:2-3).  And that there should never be a divorce unless there is marital unfaithfulness (Matthew 19:9). Jesus added that divorce was permitted only “because of the hardness” of our hearts “but from the beginning it was not so” (Matthew 19:8).

So, people that marry become united with their “soul mates.“ And they should do everything in their ability with God’s power, in spite of the difficulties they may face, to make their marriage successful. This means that they should work out their problems with the love of the Lord. For the Lord hates divorce (Malachi 2:16), and marrying the wrong person is never presented, in the Bible, as a right reason for divorce.

When people contemplate marriage they should seek the Lord to lead them to a suitable mate. They should claim the promise, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

And if a person made a mistake and married an unsuitable person, the Lord can still fix his marriage for it is the pleasure of God to heal and restore. The Lord promised, “I will heal thee of thy wounds” (Jeremiah 30:17). And He has placed in His Word healing principles that once adopted by couples it will produce joy, happiness and peace (Joshua 1:8 ).|
