Nick is asking genesis 2:7 and man became a living soul. So are we the soul proving selling your soul is impossible?
Speaker 2
Hi Nick. That is a fantastic call question. I think that is really awesome as far as the thought process and going into that. And I think it’s important that we do understand what is a soul? What does that mean? And when you go back to Genesis chapter two, verse seven, it becomes very clear when you read it. It says and the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. And man became a living soul. So it wasn’t until the body was formed from the dust and the breath of life came from God because only God can give life. Those coming together then created a living soul. Kind of like if you have bread and you have peanut butter, those are two different things. When they come together it’s a sandwich, it’s a different thing. And you see death is basically life in reverse. And you see that in Ecclesiastes chapter twelve or seven where basically when we die that the dust returns to the earth and the breath returns to God who sent it. And when you die you’re basically asleep. And there’s many, many verses that talk about death being asleep.
Speaker 2
Now as far as selling your soul, there is a verse in Matthew chapter 16 that says jesus says in Matthew 16 verse 26 that basically what will a man give for his soul? But I think we have to go back to kind of what we’re saying as far as looking at the original language and in the original Greek, the word for soul. Here is the word psyche, which might be pronounced more like psycho but when you look at the meaning of it, it still means breath. And so you see this also in Matthew chapter ten in verse 28 where it says and do not fear them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. So there’s only two things that can get destroyed, which is the soul and the body, basically the breath and the physical being. And only God is the one that could destroy the soul because only God is the one that could create it. And so I don’t think you can sell your soul as in like as if the soul is some mystical thing inside of you that you can give to the devil that he’ll reward you for.
Speaker 2
But this is what I would say. You can sell your soul in the sense that you sell your life, your breath, every breath that God gives you is a gift from him. So you can give the devil your life, your influence, whatever it is in your life that you have. You can surrender it to the devil in exchange for something just like you see that in Luke chapter four, when the devil attempted Jesus in the wilderness. In Luke chapter four, verses five to eight. And I just want to bring this up really quick, four, verses five through eight. And it reads, then the devil taking him, being Jesus up on a high mountain, shows him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And it goes on to say, and the devil said to him, all this authority I will give you and their glory, for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomsoever I wish. And verse seven says, therefore, if you will worship before me, all will be yours. And so the devil basically tempted Jesus, saying, you don’t have to suffer on the cross. You don’t have to do this difficult journey that you’re on.
Speaker 2
You just worship me and I’ll give you the world. The devil tries to offer something he really doesn’t have, and the devil has some things he can kind of offer, but really nothing that satisfies. And I love Jesus answer in Luke chapter four, verse eight. And Jesus says and Jesus answered and said unto him, get behind me, Satan, for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. And Jesus in his awesomeness was of course quoting Scripture. He was quoting the book of Deuteronomy. And so how do we fight temptation of any kind? We have to fight it with the word of God, which is the sword of the Spirit. And so the devil can tempt you that, hey, in exchange for something you do your actions, your life, your influence, whatever, he is going to offer you things. And sadly, you see that in Hollywood a lot, a lot of people have confessed that he sold their soul to the devil and now they’re famous and whatever. And I’m sure demons possess these people and they’re using their talents, their life to basically do the work of the devil and bringing bad influence in this world.
Speaker 2
And that’s just terrible. And what makes me so sad for these people is, was it worth it to have the pleasure of Sin first season, to enjoy whatever this world has to offer for a few years and then be destroyed eternally? It’s not worth it. I would much rather give my life to Jesus where I have peace in this life and I have a peace knowing that when I die or if Jesus should come, I’m eternally secured and I have eternal life in a place that’s more beautiful and more magnificent than anything this world has to offer. And so can you sell your soul to the devil? Not in the sense that your soul is something that is outside of your body and your breath of life combined, no. But you can give your time, your life, your influence to either the works of the devil in this world. Or you can surrender your life to God and have his peace and his love and joy and his eternal gift of salvation offered to you. And my prayer for you then, of course, is that you’ll choose life and choose Jesus, which offers your life more abundant, as he says in John, chapter ten, verse ten.
Speaker 2
Jay or Wendy, any other thoughts?
Speaker 3
I just want to quote Roque that I like Tina’s explanation.
Speaker 2
Thank you, I’ll do that.
Speaker 3
And then Roque has also, I think, a really good synopsis of it. He says, well, saying your soul would be synonymous with yourself. I think that really does sum up perfectly what all you said. Kell asks, can you get your soul back? And so I think you should have summarized it right. But the answer is yes.
Speaker 2
You never really lost it to begin with, but you can definitely redeem the time. It’s never too late to come back to Jesus. As long as there’s life, there’s hope. So even if someone feels that they did sell their soul to the devil, your God is much more powerful than anything on this earth, any devil, any demon. Jesus, he was victorious on the cross, and the devil lost when it came back to the time of Calvary. And so Jesus is the winner, the devil is the loser. You don’t need to be stuck under the devil’s lies because the devil likes to trick us and deceive us. That’s his whole thing. He’s the liar and the father of lies. And the thing with the devil is he’ll tempt you to sin, and then as soon as you sin, he’ll accuse you of it and say, look how terrible you are. You’re never going to be right with God again. And that’s how the devil operates. He just comes to steal, kill and destroy. And I’m so grateful that Jesus says, but I’ve come that they might have life and they might have life more abundant. And we really have to know God’s word to know the truth, which says one John one nine, that if we confess our sins, he’s faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Speaker 2
So there’s never a point you’ve gone too far that God cannot forgive you and cleanse you and make you clean and white again, figuratively speaking, because Jesus, he’s all powerful. And so even if you’ve given your life to the devil in the past, you don’t have to stay that way. You can come to Jesus, you can have a right relationship with him again, because God says he’s not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Speaker 3
And what you said to remind me of Matthew 1229, where Jesus compares himself to a strong man sorry, he compares Satan to a strong man and he starts to just that. Jesus himself is able to go into that strong man’s house, tie him up and then plunder his house. Meaning if Satan has you held hostage, captive in his house, jesus is stronger than him. Go in, can tie up Satan and haul you back as his reward.
Speaker 2
Amen. I know. I feel like the devil tries to put on this show. He’s so powerful, don’t get me wrong, he is. And we can’t with our own strength outsmart him or out with him or out anything. He’s a very strong angel that fell from heaven. But Jesus is God and the devil is a creation created being in. Jesus is the Creator. And I always liked the verse in Matthew 16, verse 18 where it says that basically we’re talking about that when Peter said that Jesus is the Son of God. And Christ said that upon this rock the truth, that Jesus is the Son of God, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Meaning that we go on the devil’s territory and there’s nothing the devil can do about it. If God is for us, who can be against us?
Speaker 3
What you said there’s actually right because a lot of people think it’s the hell coming and attacking the way you say yes, they can’t survive. They’re on the defensive and they’re not going to survive save inside.
Speaker 2
No. We have the sword of the Spirit. Greater he that is in you than he that is in the world. Amen.
