Do some Christians suffer from depression?

Depression and Christians

Depression is a condition that attacks many people, including Christians. But the Bible assures that God can deliver His children from this state. Every single person that came to Jesus was healed from physical and mental problems without exception. “And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all” (Matthew 12:15; Matthew 15:30; Luke 6:17).

But Christians have a very important and essential role to play and that is to cooperate with God’s healing hand. The Lord asks His people to focus on His goodness rather than on their troubles: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice” (Philippians 4:4). Some wonder how can a Christian rejoice in God when he is attacked by depression?

God gives the grace to overcome EVERY obstacle in the believer’s life: “The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not provide for you.” God will never ask you to do something that He can’t provide the power to accomplish it. The following promises will help all those who are suffering with depression to gain victory:

“But the Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and keep you from evil” (2 Thessalonians 3:3).

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it“ (1 Corinthians 10:13).

“For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:6).

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen” (Jude 1:24-25).

Through daily Bible study, prayer, fellowship with believers, forgiveness, and counseling, the Lord can give the Christian victory over depression. God is in the business of restoration, healing and giving hope. Millions through the ages testify to His transforming power (Ephesians 1:19). “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

It should be added that depression may be the cause of a physical disorder or chemical imbalance that needs to be treated medically. For this reason, it is important for the Christian to have his condition professionally diagnosed first. If this is the case, medical help may be recommended.
