Paul is asking in Psalms 23:5, what is meant by Thou prepares the table before me in the presence of my enemies. Thou anointed my head with oil, my cup runneth over.
I love this question. I do too do. This is a great question and it’s something that I’ve thought about before. I love the book of Psalms. Psalms are such a beautiful portion of the Bible. And David, he really had a way of expressing his love for God and his relationship with God in the book of Psalms. And Psalms 23 is one of the most famous of all Psalms, just because of how beautiful of a way that David describes how God is leading him through his life. This is the Psalm that starts out, I walk through the Valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear any evil because you are with me, Lord. And so here it’s saying, thank you in verse four, that’s kind of the verse before this. And then if you go into verse five, which is the verse you’re asking about, Psalms 23, verse five, goes ahead and says, you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemy. So let’s stop there and just to find out really quick. So, he’s saying, God is with me even in the Valley of the shadow of death, even in the hardest times in our life, God is with me.
And he’s saying, you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. And what I believe David is saying when he expresses this is that he’s saying that God is honoring him. Even in the times when his enemies are angry at him, God is preparing a table for him. God is blessing him in the presence of his enemies. God is honoring him even though he’s not honored in the eyes of these evil men that are in the world. And so that’s my conclusion of what it means to be that prepares the table for me in the presence of my enemies. And I think that God honors those who honor him. And so, to me, that’s kind of what David is expressing here, because we see that in his life, we see that when he was being chased by Saul the King, David was supposed to be King, and he was anointed as King. But David waited patiently until Saul was no longer King. And even during that time, Saul was trying to kill David and get rid of him. But God continued to bless him, even in the presence of his enemy. God continued to bless him in his life.
So that’s what I believe David is saying here. And I believe that’s how I read the Bible there. When you keep going in Psalms 23, verse five, it says, you anoint my head with oil, my cup runs over. So, when somebody’s head was anointed with oil, it meant that they were selected for a divine purpose. So, David actually his head was literally anointed with oil. We see that in the book for Samuel Where David is anointed as King by Samuel the Prophet. And so, the story is that David had, I believe, seven brothers or he was the youngest of seven and they were trying when God said, go to the house of Jesse and select one of these men he will be the next King and Samuel the Prophet saw the eldest brother and was like, this must be him he looks so strong. And God said, I have not chosen him and he goes through all the brothers and he’s like, there’s no one else here. They’re like, do you have any other brothers? God said he didn’t select any of these young men and they said, oh, there’s David out in the field Watching the Shepherd, Watching the sheep and so God chose the youngest, the least qualified and that’s kind of the way God is a lot of the time.
And so, his head literally was anointed with oil. He was selected by God for purpose and oil is a symbol of the Holy spirit so just like we are selected by God If we selected by God or when Jesus started his Ministry he was baptized and he was anointed with the Holy spirit it’s just a symbol of being anointed by God for this Holy spirit for a special purpose for your life. And then the last part of the verse says, my cup runs over and the Bible when we’re talking about a cup you’re an empty vessel and if your cup runs over Meaning like you’re overflowed with flowing with blessings and so just God filled his Cup God filled his life with so many good things and just as it says in the Bible that every good and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the father of lights with who is no shadow of turning and so this is how I read this verse is that he prepares a table in the presence of his enemies God blesses him even in the presence of those who might hate him he’s still blessed and honored by God his head is annoyed with Because he’s anointed for a specific purpose by God and he is blessed abundantly I think that’s it.
